CASE STUDY

Name: Sam Warren
Company: CJL
Site: Alphington, Exeter
Date of Case Study: 2 February 2022

In November 2021, Sam enrolled onto the Alphington Skills Academy with the goal of gaining some qualifications relevant to the construction industry so he could progress within his career.

After prospering within the training, itself, as well as during the on-site work experience, Sam was offered an apprenticeship with one of the contractors on the Alphington site.

Vistry  recently sat down with Sam to ask him a few questions about he obtained his apprenticeship as well as his thoughts on the Routeway2Construction Course.

How did you go about getting the apprenticeship?

When doing my work experience on the Alphington site, I was put in contact with one of the main contractors on site, CJL. After doing a bit of work experience with them (Blockwork, Brickwork etc.) I was offered to start an apprenticeship in Bricklaying with them. An opportunity I was over the moon to receive.

When do you start the apprenticeship?

I believe I will be starting the apprenticeship in September. Until then, I will be working with CJL so I can continually enhance my skillset.

What do you want to get out of the apprenticeship?

I want to become skilled within the profession of Bricklaying. I’m hoping that being back in education, alongside getting experience working on site will allow me to achieve this.

How do you feel the Routeway2Construction Course helped in obtaining the apprenticeship?

The Train4All trainers at the Academy were absolutely brilliant and helped massively in me getting the apprenticeship. The course wasn’t too full on and was split up really well. It gave me enough time to complete my qualifications as well as learn my trade. I would recommend the course to anyone who wants to go into an apprenticeship.

Do you have any top tips for anyone else looking to get into an apprenticeship?

I believe the most important thing is that when doing the work experience, it’s vital that you turn up every week, on the ball and willing to learn. If you do that, there will be a lot of opportunity
