There is a range of training opportunities available to anyone who wants to get into the construction and built environment sector. Different routes and pathways will be open to everyone depending on the experience and qualifications that you already have, no matter what these are there is a route for you!

Routes into roles in the construction and built environment sectors and progression pathways include:

  • Short/taster courses – anything from 1 day to 2 weeks
  • Traineeships – 6-12 week courses that include practical work experience
  • Apprenticeships – trade, technical and professional including degree apprenticeships
  • Vocational qualifications/A Levels
  • Construction T Levels (Level 3 two year qualification, equivalent to 3 A Levels)
  • Construction Diplomas
  • National Diplomas and Certificates
  • Higher National Certificates (HNCs) and Diplomas (HNDs)
  • Foundation Degrees
  • Bachelor’s Degrees
  • Master’s Degrees
  • Chartered Status

Petroc is committed to driving forward educational success in further and higher education. Petroc is made up of three campuses situated in Mid and North Devon, and offers a wide range of courses for students of all ages and abilities including A-levels, vocational courses, T-levels, degrees, apprenticeships, industry short courses and recreational courses.

Trans Plant Mastertrain is a professional training company delivering a wide range of practical and theoretical training courses. Their service includes all aspects of LGV / HGV Training, Construction Plant, Forklift, Apprenticeships, Driver CPC, and much more. Trans Plant Master Train’s training centre is ideally situated inside The Livestock Centre on the Marsh Barton Industrial Estate, Exeter

With over 11 years’ experience in the construction industry, Greenlight Training specialises in delivering construction apprenticeships and work closely with some of the South West’s key employers, helping you get the greenlight on your career. Their experienced and fully qualified instructors deliver a wide range of courses from approved bodies such as CITB, IOSH, HABC, MHFA and UKTA. Some of the courses delivered include SSSTS, SMSTS, Health & Safety Awareness, IOSH Managing Safely, First Aid, Fire Safety and Asbestos Training.

Shared Apprenticeships employ entry-level construction apprentices from the local community on flexible work placements with contractors in the area and see them through to completion with a local college or training provider. Their apprentices are in L2 Trades and L3/L4 Technical and Management roles, and most are aged 16-21 so they provide HR management, a Mentor for guidance, and Early Careers Manager for academic supervision.  Shared Apprenticeships are a not-for-profit social enterprise and can help if you want to ‘grow your own’, but don’t have the capacity to recruit, employ, find college provision, mentor, and support a young apprentice through to completion. The Devon and Cornwall Training Providers Network Ltd, is a not-for-profit organisation and covers both Devon and Cornwall, providing a voice for the training provider sector, as well as giving practical support and partnership opportunities for Members. The Network enjoys a diverse Membership, with 50+ members from across both counties, and includes, two universities, five colleges of further education, Careers South West, National Careers Service, and a wide range of independent training providers.
