William carried out a six-week work placement working alongside Kier’s Commercial Manager and Quantity Surveyors.
3 days a week for 6 weeks work experience with the Commercial team.
William is currently studying Commercial Management and Quantity Surveying at Loughborough University with the ambition to follow the QS/ Commercial Manager career path.
During the 6 weeks placement, William visited/worked on three of Kier’s sites. On the first day of his placement, he visited their St Loyes site in Exeter. During his time at St Loyes, he had the opportunity to shadow the QS on site to see what his job consists of on a day-to-day basis.
During the second day, William visited Kier’s Hall for Cornwall site in Truro. Similar to his time at St Loyes, he was able to shadow the QS on site. This was a brilliant way for William to see how two separate jobs are managed and how the role differs for each of their sites.
For the remining 4 weeks, William spent his time at St Sidwells Point in Exeter. The QS on site went through his day-to-day role, as well as assisted William with putting his course work into real life on site.
During his time at St Sidwells, William was not only given the chance to shadow the QS, he was also set tasks in which helped not only his understanding and knowledge but also helped Kier as a company.
Following discussions at the end of William’s placement, he was extremely grateful to Kier for giving him the opportunity. He stated that the time at Kier helped him grow his network, prepared him for the future and gave him a better understanding of the Construction industry.
“I really enjoyed being given worthwhile tasks to do such as take-offs and producing schedules. This is because I could see they were benefiting both myself in terms of me learning as well as Kier. Being shown how to do tasks like this by professionals working in the field will be highly beneficial to the rest of my degree and career.”
